The State of California requires that businesses, organizations, multi-family housing developments, and residences recycle organic material. Organic materials include food waste, green waste, landscaping debris, food soiled papers.
When organic materials are disposed in a landfill, they biodegrade and emit methane gas – a climate pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. In 2016, the State passed Senate Bill (SB) 1383 to help reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants. The legislation set statewide targets to reduce disposal of organic waste by 75% and increase edible food recovery by 20%.

The City of La Cañada Flintridge responded by developing its own organic recycling program and passing Ordinance 500 in November 2021.
Residents are required to subscribe to organic recycling services and recycle their organic waste by placing it into their green bin.
